The Okens Blog Returns

One year ago today, I ended my travel blog about a 77-day, 30,000km round-the-world journey with these words:

“Freedom isn’t free, as they say. I have been very lucky to have the money, health, and time to pursue and achieve these dreams. Whatever your aspirations, big or small, may you have the same good fortune.”

So what have I done since then? Um, well, uh. That is what this re-launched blog will be about – the self-inflicted joys and indignities of holding out for…what exactly?

Blogosphere wisdom is that you must become THE expert on a topic, thereby attracting and retaining a loyal following. While I was traveling, choosing that one subject – travel – was easy. But now I’m going to take on three topics and see have them fight it out for my (and your) interest.

Sport

Endurance sport is part of my lifestyle. I coach at a community rowing club, and I’m training to run a Boston-qualifying marathon in the spring. People and situations in sport are funny, inspiring, exciting, and sometimes even a source of wisdom. They are worth writing about.

Life and Career

Not knowing what you want. Thinking you know what you want and being wrong. Thinking you know how to get what you want, but executing it badly. Learning from your mistakes and getting better at job searching and networking. Explaining yourself to yourself (and others). I wish I wasn’t developing so much expertise in this field, but I have lessons to share.

Reader Requests

Bring it on! No topic is off limits, and if I flame out at least it will be entertaining. Early suggestions include:

  • Rock salt vs. that liquid saline mixture to de-ice the roads.
  • A man-to-meteor Q & A with the Manhattan-island-sized hunk of space rock that will slam into the earth in 2113, eradicating all complex life.
  • On doing something that scares you.

If I choose your subject, I will even work you in the post if you want.

What else can you expect from my writing? Two posts per week to start. And a quick read.

Game on!
